Apartment List ranks the most and least expensive cities for utility costs.

Much of the northeastern United States experiences all four seasons, but this comes at a great cost to residents, as the Northeast is home to some of the most expensive utility bills in the nation.

According to Apartment List, Bridgeport, Conn., is the most expensive city for utilities, with an average utility bill of more than $353. About 20 miles away is New Haven, Conn., where the average utility bill is $311.62. Boston ranks third at $296.22. Worcester, Mass., Hartford, Conn., and Providence, R.I., are also on the list of the top 10 most expensive cities.

Exponential rent growth during the pandemic has not hindered Boise, Idaho, which is the least expensive city with an average utility bill of $186.55. The next three cities are all in Florida—North Port, Palm Bay and Cape Coral—and have average costs under $200. Deltona, Fla., is the 10th least expensive city.

Overall, the average monthly cost of utilities is $240 per month, but this only includes basic utilities of electricity, gas and water. Gas bills can range from $30-$50 per month, while water can be anywhere from $28-$60 per month. Electricity ranges from $103-$191 per month. The cost of utilities also depends on the size of apartments. Studios average just under $115 per month, one-bedrooms are $125 and two-bedrooms are roughly $195 per month.
