San Diego, the city that bathes in year-round sunshine, boasts a temperate climate and offers ready access to picturesque beaches and majestic mountains, is often seen as a dream destination for tourists. But what makes it a perfect place to call home? Rick Snyder, CPM, the 2024 NAA Chair of the Board and a true-blooded San Diegan, explains, “San Diego is a slice of paradise tucked within the U.S. borders. Unlike other regions, we don’t have to grapple with excessive humidity or extreme heat. Our seasons might not be as pronounced, but this is the life I’m accustomed to; this is my home.”

Snyder’s journey in real estate began even before he finished high school, culminating in establishing his own business in 1988. His passion for property management blossomed after earning his business administration degree from San Diego State University. He found joy in designing processes and structures that ensured successful property management. Now, as NAA’s first Chair from California in 40 years, he feels privileged and honored to bring his visionary leadership to the table. 

This year, 2024, is an election year that may bring fresh legal and regulatory challenges to the multifamily housing industry. However, Snyder is confident that NAA will continue to serve as a valuable resource for its members, keeping them informed and educated. 

Snyder’s entrepreneurial spirit shines through his leadership as he guides individuals and teams, some of whom have been with his company for over two decades. “Success,” he believes, “is a collective accomplishment” His listening, absorbing, reflecting and acting approach has earned him accolades from peers, including the Immediate Past Chair of NAA’s Board, Ronda Puryear.

Besides the multifamily housing industry, R.A. Snyder Properties also operates in the office and retail space in the San Diego metro area. Snyder’s association with NAA has been transformational, enabling him to significantly contribute to the industry. 

Early achievements, such as becoming an Eagle Scout at 16 and serving as the youngest San Diego Association of Realtors President at 30, set the stage for Snyder’s illustrious career. His philosophy on property management is that it is a space to make a real difference in people’s lives, providing numerous opportunities for problem-solving in a constantly evolving environment.

While Snyder embraces the mentorship role, his aim is not to actively seek protégés but to be available for those who seek advice. He has found immense satisfaction from working with new entrants in the industry and answering their questions on creating a work-life balance, prioritizing tasks and maintaining focus and attention in business and personal life.

Snyder’s guiding principle, a lesson from his father, is that a good reputation is painstakingly built but can be destroyed by a single misstep. His involvement with local, state and national committees has enriched his understanding of people and honed his leadership skills.

The path to success, according to Snyder, is only sometimes through good times. The real test of leadership comes during challenging periods. He believes that every challenge brings significant opportunities. While decisions during such times may be difficult, they help move the organization forward to prepare for the next prosperous period. 

Snyder is keenly aware that property management is not just about managing properties but about managing relationships. He sees the industry as a platform to touch people’s lives positively. He is committed to providing value to all stakeholders, including residents, the onsite team, corporate employees, industry supplier partners and ownership. 

Under Snyder’s leadership, R.A. Snyder Properties is all set for future growth, focusing on Southern California. The company is diversifying its portfolio and getting more involved with new multifamily and commercial developments, especially infill projects. He advocates creating passive income through real estate, which allows stakeholders to collectively benefit. 

At the intersection of capitalism and compassion, Snyder sees a unique combination that few industries enjoy. He believes that empathy, understanding and compassion, coupled with a return on investment, can coexist and complement each other.

Snyder attributes his success to the unwavering support from his family, friends and co-workers. He believes that without their backing, he could not have achieved his level of commitment to NAA. He looks forward to making a difference as the Chair in 2024 with their continued support. “I’m deeply thankful for the love and willingness of my family to share me with the association, a wonderful group of friends, and co-workers,” he says. “Their support allows me to fulfill my commitment to NAA and make a difference.”
