Laundry Matters: Students Rank Top Amenities
Looking to cater to today's off-campus student housing demographic? Roomy, high-tech apartments with individual bathrooms score highest with students, according to What Millennials Want: Resident Preferences in Student Housing Design and Amenities, a survey of 7,095 college students conducted this year by Houston-based J Turner Research for the Multifamily Executive 2013 Concept Community.
Survey results indicate that today's students are no longer interested in a road trip home to do the laundry--79 percent of respondents say an in-unit washer/dryer is their top apartment amenity, followed by a private bathroom for each roommate (68 percent), cable and Wi-Fi included in the rent (54 percent), and parking included with rent (42 percent). Amenities scoring lowest included green features like recycling and trash pick-up (11 percent), and the ability to paint rooms any color desired (5 percent).
