In Memphis, the Greenbriar apartment community recently partnered with the Safeways organization in an effort to reduce crime and improve living conditions. As a result, Greenbriar is now a Safeways Certified Community. Julaine Harris, executive director of the Safeways Certification Program, remarks, "We have a nationally certified inspector who actually comes out and walks the property during the day looking at entrances, exits, landscaping, lighting, and really determines what kind of security measures are in place in a particular community and we make recommendations on that."

Police are onsite to monitor problems and establish relationships with residents, and the Anti-Trespass Program and Cyber-Watch programs are also onsite.

In addition, Safeways is helping apartment managers offer nutritional planning programs for residents and their families. There are now more than a dozen apartment communities in Memphis designated as Safeways Properties, with more are in the works. Safeways says 10 of its 15 properties were able to reduce crime last year, eight of them by at least 50 percent. The program is funded via grants and fees the apartment communities pay.
