In 2016, national commercial and multifamily construction increased by 7 percent from 2015, for a total of $186.3 billion. The New York metro area had the largest total number of starts at 29,775, though that number is 15 percent less than the 2015 total.
Los Angeles (9,820), Chicago (8,327), Washington, DC (8,147), and Dallas-Ft. Worth (7,966) round out the top five for commercial and multifamily starts, with all of these metro areas experiencing increases over their 2015 numbers. Los Angeles starts were up 44 percent year over year.
Looking at multifamily starts only, New York saw a 28 percent decrease in 2016 compared with 2015. Meanwhile, in 2016, multifamily starts in Los Angeles increased by 50 percent over the previous year, and Chicago’s multifamily sector saw an 82 percent year-over-year jump. Washington, DC, and Dallas-Ft. Worth registered smaller year-over-year multifamily construction increases of 20 percent and 22 percent, respectively.
