How much square footage does a renter get for $1,500 across the country? RENTCafé crunched the numbers on the 30 most populous cities in the U.S., and, not shockingly, New York City offers the smallest rental abode — 271 square feet — for that amount, while renters in Memphis, Tenn., can score a 1,948-square-foot home.

Rounding out the top five smallest apartments for $1,500 a month after NYC are San Francisco (342 square feet), Boston (399 square feet), San Jose (526 square feet) and Washington, D.C. (558 square feet).

In the largest five along with Memphis are Oklahoma City (1,786 square feet); Indianapolis, Ind. (1,724 square feet); El Paso, Texas (1,667 square feet); and Columbus, Ohio (1,667 square feet).

Of course, the average square footage and the average monthly rent vary from city to city, from 727 square feet and $4,031 monthly rent in Manhattan to 920 square feet and $704 monthly rent in Memphis.
