Ranking Internet Speeds Across the Nation’s 100 Largest Metros

New analysis ranks the country’s internet speeds, which many industry observers say will factor into resident’s housing preferences going forward.

The East Coast is home to some of the fastest internet in the U.S. HighSpeedInternet.com analyzed internet speeds in the 100 largest metros in the country and found the average internet speed in those metros is 89.3 Mbps. Unfortunately, the eastern portion of the U.S. is also home to much of the top 10 slowest metros for internet.

Washington, D.C., was the fastest metro at 129.1 Mbps, while Charleston, W.Va. at 32.7 Mbps was the slowest. Philadelphia, San Francisco, New York City, Boston and Baltimore all had average download speeds of at least 120 Mbps. San Antonio, Texas; Dallas-Fort Worth; Las Vegas, Nev.; and Houston completed the top 10 fastest metros. There were 37 metros with average download speeds of more than 100 Mbps.

Boise, Idaho; Toledo, Ohio; Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and Scranton, Penn., joined Charleston in the top five slowest metros. Little Rock, Ark.; Portland, Maine; Lansing, Mich.; Fort Wayne, Ind.; and Rochester, N.Y., closed the top 10 slowest metros. Thirty-eight of the metros had internet speeds below the national average.

While looking at median download speed improvements during the last 12 months, Los Angeles increased download speeds by 25 Mbps. New York City saw its median download speeds improve from 57.5 Mbps to nearly 80 Mbps.

HighSpeedInternet.com reviewed speed tests from Feb. 1, 2020, to March 16, 2021, totaling 1.3 million results.
