New York City celebrated the opening of its first micro-unite apartment building on Manhattan’s East Side with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Oct. 27. The city is touting the community as a way to help meet the need for affordable housing, as well as the need for its growing number of small one- and two-person households. NAA President & CEO Doug Culkin provided quotes to USA Today praising the opening.

"The development of more microunit apartments will increase the affordable housing supply in high-density, high-cost areas like New York, and provide urban residents with more affordable housing options," Culkin said. "We hope to see more micro-units not only in New York, but in other urban areas across the country."

Culkin added, "They’re perfect for residents on a budget who still want to live in the heart of a major city, in a really nice community. Designers have noted that these apartments also appeal to more affluent professionals who work very long hours and want to be in the city, close to their place of work on Monday through Friday. They only need a mattress and a week’s worth of clothes because they’re spending their weekends at their main residence outside of the city."

The development of more micro-unit apartments increases a city’s affordable housing supply and provides urban residents with more affordable housing options.

The article was put on the Gannett wire and picked up by more than 50 newspapers with 12 million potential impressions.
