My RPM Story: RPM Careers Ambassador Casey Rusk

RPM Career AmbassadorWhen I graduated from Ball State University, I ended up in a struggling job market where finding employment was nearly impossible. I started searching for careers and apartments in the Indianapolis area, never thinking I’d find both at the same place!

I’m not the first person to enter residential property management while looking for someplace to live. Many people may not think about our industry for a career until they interact with us. That’s why RPMcareers.org is so important, and it’s why I became an RPM Careers ambassador.

As an RPM Careers ambassador, I tell job seekers my story so that more people are aware of all the opportunities our industry has to offer. When candidates contact me, I tell them how I started as an apartment-hunter and ended up becoming the director of residential services for Milhaus Management, which in July 2015 was named the fastest-growing company in the Indianapolis area by the Indianapolis Business Journal.

Back when I was apartment-hunting in Indianapolis, I had an amazing experience with an outgoing and efficient leasing consultant. I thought I would enjoy doing what she did, but I didn’t have any experience in, or any real understanding of, the industry.

So I enrolled in the property management graduate program at Ball State.

Five years later, I am overseeing a brand-new community in Zionsville. My day-to-day activities vary: I lease apartments, create and implement marketing plans and tools, analyze financials, monitor the budget, develop and train my team, and perform property inspections.

What I love most about working in RPM is that two days are never the same, so I’m never bored. RPM is a fast-paced work environment, so the hours tend to go by quickly. It’s an environment in which I am constantly learning, so if I make a mistake, I own up to it — and I grow from it.

I wanted to be an RPM Careers ambassador so I could share my passion for this industry with others. I love connecting with people and helping to answer their questions. And when I talk with people, I think they can sense my love for the industry, and for my company.

Most people want a career that they, too, can be passionate about, so deciding to become an RPM Careers ambassador to spread the word about this industry was a no-brainer.
