HUD Secretary to Focus on Cutting Regulations, Increasing Innovation
Digested from Multifamily Insiders
At the recent National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) conference, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Ben Carson said he will focus on reducing regulations in existing housing programs and wants to see new approaches to service delivery.
Carson encouraged NAHRO attendees to address community development more holistically, working with other agencies on health, workforce development and criminal justice issues.
The Obama administration’s Choice Neighborhoods Initiative (CNI) funded cross-agency housing and community development efforts, including school improvement, provision of social services and commercial expansion. However, the recent Trump administration budget proposal eliminates funding for CNI.
Under Secretary Carson, HUD could create another program that works across agencies to achieve holistic community solutions.
“Certainly Secretary Carson’s background in health care has many observers thinking about how HUD may expand its work to address health impacts within HUD-funded housing,” writes Nathaniel Cushman, associate in Nixon Peabody's Affordable Housing practice, for Multifamily Insiders.
