Castro Confirmed as HUD Secretary
Julian Castro sailed through Senate confirmation to become secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) on July 9 with a vote of 71 to 26. Many inside and outside Washington believe that this is just the next step for Castro who is considered a rising political star when it comes to visibility on the national stage.
Specifically, Castro most recently served as mayor of San Antonio and has been talked about as a potential vice presidential running mate for Hillary Clinton after his compelling keynote speech at the 2012 Democratic National Convention. NAA/NMHC issued a statement applauding Castro’s confirmation.
Former HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan was also confirmed to head the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) by the Senate on July 10. Together, HUD and OMB are responsible for a large portion of federal housing policy, so the decision to move Secretary Donovan to OMB was widely support by the real estate industry.
