Apartment Leaders: Congressman-elect Jeff Van Drew
Candidates for Congress often look optimistically to Capitol Hill only to find it a steep climb. Long nights, endless door-knocking and the constant glare of the media spotlight are just a few of the factors that punish candidates for their choice to serve. As a Township Committeeman, a Mayor and the office of Chosen Freeholder of Cape May County, New Jersey, Jeff Van Drew has plenty of experience with these conditions. Now he will get the opportunity to ply that experience in Congress, having won against his opponent, Republican Seth Grossman, to represent New Jersey’s 2nd Congressional District; a seat left open by retiring Representative Frank LoBiondo.
Congressman-elect Van Drew is currently a member of the New Jersey State Senate and is chairman of its committee with jurisdiction on housing issues. A conservative Democrat, he advocates for small government and lower taxes. Congressman-elect Van Drew brings with him business acumen that stems from running a successful dental practice for 39 years. At the same time, he has held elected office at the local, county and state levels of government. Congressman-elect Van Drew has been a steadfast supporter of business and the rental housing industry throughout his career in Trenton. Specifically, he understands the negative impact that new mandates have on both the cost of doing business and ultimately on rents.
Even more important than his background is his character. Congressman-elect Van Drew is also a consensus builder. When advocates disagree on issues, he takes a pragmatic and thoughtful approach toward finding solutions.
NAA is happy to welcome Congressman-elect Jeff Van Drew to the 116th Congress. He is a person who truly understands the rental housing industry at a time when it is most needed.
