The National Apartment Association (NAA) is proud to be a partner of the United States Census Bureau as it prepares to fulfill its mission of counting everyone once, only once and in the right place. The decennial census – conducted by the federal government every 10 years – helps distribute more than $675 billion in federal funds to support vital programs in communities throughout the country. The data impacts housing, education, transportation, employment, health care and public policy, making accurate collection of critical importance. The census also determines the number of seats each state gets in the U.S. House of Representative and is used to redraw proportionate congressional and state legislative districts.
The next census will take place in 2020, and households will receive a notice in the mail in mid-March. And, for the first time ever, people can respond online in addition to the traditional phone and mail options. Responding to the census is essential; when individuals are missed in the population count, important programs lose out on funding and communities miss out on representation among lawmakers.
As an Owner or Operator, How Does this Affect My Business?
Apartment owners and operators can play an important role in the success of the 2020 census. As a trusted voice in the community, you can help provide information to your residents about the importance and benefits of participating while raising awareness of the once-a-decade population count. And, as the U.S. Census Bureau deploys official counters to households that haven’t responded, the apartment industry will play a key role in ensuring access to properties and their residents. As a partner of the U.S. Census Bureau, NAA will work with their officials to provide valuable materials to help facilitate our industry’s role in the 2020 census.
