5 Must-Have Amenities for Renters
Digested from New Largest-Ever Apartment Rental Survey Highlights Amenities Renters Cant Live Without
Location, mobile access, package storage, pet features and electronic payments are the top amenities renters seek. And as more renters have entered the marketplace, their expectations for amenities have risen.
There have been 1.6 million new renter households created in the past five years, said Rick Haughey, vice president of industry technology initiatives at the National Multifamily Housing Council (NMHC). Many of these new residents are making a lifestyle choice to rent instead of buy and are thus looking for personalized services and amenities. The apartment industry is stepping up to provide those experiences.
Nearly 120,000 respondents shared their preferences in the 2015 Apartment Resident Preferences Survey, conducted by NMHC and Kingsley Associates. Highlights included:
a desire to walk to local destinations such as grocery stores and restaurants, but drive to work;
an interest in a package storage/holding area, which most renters would expect to receive for free but for which they would be willing to pay up to $20 per month;
good mobile reception (and more than half will test for it during apartment tours);
requests for dog parks and pet-washing stations; and
preference to pay rent both online and with a credit card.
