First-Timer FAQs

What should I bring?

Laptop or iPad to take notes and stay in the “know.”

Pen and paper to jot down contact information when business cards inevitably run out, or if you prefer hand-written session notes.

Business cards! You can never have enough. Have your business cards with you at all times; you never know when someone will ask to exchange contact info.

How do I plan my schedule?

The myNAAPlanner is a convenient tool that enables you to plan ahead and determine which education sessions will provide the best return on investment. Create a tentative schedule before the conference based on your own educational needs, and those of your company.

If you’re not already on Facebook or Twitter, get on and follow the conference hashtag at #NAASHC17. This will give you an insider’s view of what is trending before and during the meeting.

Are there helpful hints for networking?

Plan your conference schedule before you arrive in Chicago. This will give you more time to interact and engage with other attendees.

Do you have a colleague attending the meeting? Ask them to take you under their wing and introduce you to fellow attendees.

Attend as many social events and receptions as you can. You’ll be rewarded with free food and cocktails!

Take part in all Newcomer events being offered.

Show up for sessions early. You’ll score a great seat and have time to mingle with the other attendees around you.

Need a conversation starter? Ask an attendee how they liked a session you both attended.

What should I do onsite?

Attend the Welcome Reception on Tuesday February, 14. This is a great, relaxing way to meet other attendees.

Be flexible with your conference schedule. The “law of motion and responsibility”—formerly known as the “law of two feet”—should apply: If a session is not working for you, leave (even if you are seated up front). Go to another session or meet up with others outside the session rooms who want to engage in other conversations and networking opportunities.

Smile, be open and enjoy yourself! This is going to be a great experience and you are going to meet some wonderful people

Justification Letter

Want to attend the 2017 NAA Student Housing Conference & Exposition but need to get your boss’ sign-off? Use the below “justification letter” to share with your supervisor explaining all of the benefits you’ll gain by attending.

Dear <add supervisors name>
I would like your approval to attend the 2017 NAA Student Housing Conference & Exposition, February 14-15 at the Hyatt Regency in Chicago. I believe the event will enable me to bring back new ideas and innovative strategies specifically to our student housing interests. I will also be able to network with other experts and colleagues, and meet with current and potential suppliers in a timely and cost effective manner. All of the educational sessions are tailored to the student housing market and cover topics on reducing costs, improving efficiency and increasing performance. The speaker presentations are facilitated by both industry experts and apartment housing professionals who have faced similar challenges.

The following sessions would be beneficial to our existing performance improvement goals:
• Example #1
• Example #2
• Example #3

I have estimated the total expense to be <please add your airfare, roundtrip taxi to hotel at $50, hotel at $160 plus tax & resort fee per night, and choose the correct conference registration fee here:>

To ensure we get the most out of my participation, I will plan to submit a report post-conference, including an executive summary and detailed action plan.

Thank you for considering this request.
