7 Ways to Protect Your Roof
There are seven things apartment owners and managers can do to help their roofs endure during the winter months. First, check all exterior walls for leaks, stains, and cracks in brick and missing mortar. Next, check ceilings and interior walls for signs of leaks and staining. Third, check expansion joints for signs of excessive movement and splits, thin sections of membrane, and deteriorated caulking. The list goes on.
Marijuana Law a Challenge
The opening of recreational marijuana emporiums in Colorado has resulted in a "not-so-mellow relationship" between some apartment owners and residents. Under pressure from non-pot-smoking residents, a number of apartment owners, property management firms, and rental home owners are forbidding the use of marijuana in their units even though the state now legally permits it. Vic Sulzer, a lawyer representing the Apartment Association of Colorado, apartment owners do have the legal power to either allow or disallow toking on the premises.
Kentucky Apartment 'Animal Attack' Bill Lacks Bite
Under a bill the Kentucky Senate recently passed by a 29-8 margin, apartment owners who live on their own property would not be financially liable for a resident's canine if the animal attacks another person. Senate Democrats proposed an amendment requiring insurance coverage by either the apartment owner or resident in the event of such an attack. The bill passed Feb. 10 without the amendment.
