Using data from Zillow, Macro Insider looked at 50 major metropolitan areas across the United States to determine the average monthly rent payment for each city. The 20 most expensive cities had average rents ranging from $927 per month (Minneapolis-St. Paul) to $1,807 (San Jose, California). Six of the 20 most expensive locales are in California.
Other expensive locations include Washington, D.C. (third at $1,428 per month), New York (sixth, $1,228) and Boston (seventh, $1,197).
The article states that overall, “U.S. renters spent a combined $441 billion on housing in 2014.”
