(Units) Video Killed The Radio Star

Although we prefer cash, Frank Mauck and I will also accept checks and money orders.

You see, this month marks the 1st Anniversary of our monthly "units in a Minute" video series. I guess time flies when you’re an amateur director.

Over the course of 12 months, we’ve certainly learned a lot of valuable lessons. I know I have.

For example, I’ve learned that if I have an iced coffee 30 minutes prior to filming, I’m going to shoot the movie as if it were “The Blair Witch Project.” So if you’re ever watching one of our videos and it appears as though we’re onboard some sort of sea vessel, rest assured—it’s just my overly caffeinated hands that are shaking.

I’ve also learned that the star of your videos must be shameless. They must be willing to cover their face in Desitin, smell a can of salmon and hit on a co-worker while eating a powdered donut (for the sake of the video, of course). They must be willing to emulate Frank Mauck.

Finally, I’ve learned that sometimes, you have to accept “good enough.” If you’re playing up the whole “amateur” video thing, mistakes—such as my finger in the shot—often make the video even funnier.

Damn you, Starbucks!

Frank and I are still learning, but we’ve had a lot of fun this year. And while we may seem like an intimidatingly gifted duo, anyone can do this. You just need some sort of recording device—we use Frank’s iPhone—a little creativity and a basic editing platform. A steady hand helps, too.

If you want a super professional-looking video, there are services for that. But if you just want a fun way to reach your members or residents, there’s no shame in this amateur game—and no pressure to be perfect. Most people feel compelled to click on a video out of sheer curiosity. When they see someone like Frank singing Happy Birthday to himself, well, that’s just a bonus.

We want to give a big thanks to everyone who has viewed our videos this year. If you haven’t done so, it will only take 60 seconds of your time. Alright, so it’s more like 180 seconds of your time—but “units in three minutes” doesn’t have quite the same ring to it, now does it?

Hopefully you’ll laugh a little, and also be inspired to start shooting more videos for your own association or community. You can rent Frank for a very affordable price.
