Are you ready for our 2013 Apartment Careers Month in February? I know. Many of you are still sweating it out as high summertime temperatures linger on, so the chill of February still seems a long way off. In fact, it’s right around the corner. The time is now to start identifying ways to participate in Apartment Careers Month.
We have lots of tools available on our website to help you decide how to participate. Take a look at the resources – or the job needs -- you have in your own communities and then create Apartment Careers Month activities around those areas. For example,if you have a university or community college in your area, consider participating in a job fair or speaking to a class of students to let them know about the career opportunities available in the apartment industry. You also could work with the school to partner on job shadow or internship programs for students. We can help. More resources on launching apartment careers are available online.
I encourage you to visit NAA’s YouTube channel. We have several videos of people talking about how they started in the apartment industry. We also have one in which they discuss the many job opportunities our field offers. These videos are short and can easily be dropped on your website or emailed to others as hyperlinks.
For those of interested in going BEHIND the camera, consider entering our 2013 "Get Reel" Career Video Challenge. The deadline for entries is Jan. 31, 2013, and you could win a trip to the 2013 NAA Conference and Exposition in San Diego. Videos only have to be 30 seconds long. It’s open to people working in the industry as well as toResidential Property Management students. It’s a great way for people to share with others their enthusiasm for our industry.
We saw tremendous participation in the 2012 Apartment Careers Month. Career fairs and workshops were held by the Piedmont Triad Apartment Association, Central Virginia Apartment Association, Greater Charlotte Apartment Association, Houston Apartment Association and the Apartment Association of Greater Dallas. The Arizona Multihousing Association even partnered with Phoenix Channel 12 News, CareerBuilder and Apartments.com to hold a career workshop that attracted 600 applicants.
We want 2013 to be even better. I encourage all of you to look for ways that you, your company or your local affiliate can participate. Let us know how we can help!
