Apartment Industry Offers Numerous Career Opportunities for Veterans

The job opportunities available for returning veterans have been receiving a lot of attention recently, particularly among the media. The fact is that while many veterans have spent months or years living in war zones they often face another struggle when they return home – the struggle to find a job. The men and women who fought in Iraq or Afghanistan face unemployment rates that are among the highest in the nation. As they look for ways to support their families, our industry needs to let them know about the many jobs we have available.

Our industry employs more than 1 million people, yet few veterans are aware of the abundant career opportunities that await them in multifamily housing. Military veterans are often an ideal fit for our industry because they bring with them a solid work ethic, experience working as a member of a team and the ability to see a task through to completion. These skills are not easily taught, yet they can be invaluable in an industry such as ours in which every day presents a unique set of challenges and requires us to serve a wide variety of people.

For employers, the federal government even offers incentives to encourage the hiring of veterans. These incentives include the Returning Heroes Tax Credit and the Wounded Warrior Tax Credit.

Spouses of active members of the military also can take advantage of federal funding for training that can help them advance in their careers or to pursue new ones. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense, the Military Spouse Career Advancement Account (MyCAA) Program provides up to $4,000 in financial assistance with up to $2,000 a year to eligible military spouses for education and training. NAAEI designation programs includedin the MyCAA program are the Certificate for Apartment Maintenance Technician (CAMT), Certified Apartment Manager (CAM) Certified Apartment Portfolio Supervisor (CAPS) and National Apartment Leasing Professional (NALP).

If you know of a veteran or a spouse of an active member of the military, please encourage them to look into the many career opportunities available in the apartment industry at www.ApartmentCareerHQ.org. We are thankful for their service and their sacrifice, and we would be honored to have them working in our industry.
