Julián Castro, new Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), will speak to NAA Capitol Conference attendees during a special luncheon session on March 17.
As Secretary, Castro's focus is ensuring that HUD is a transparent, efficient and effective champion for the people it serves. Utilizing an evidence-based management style, he has charged the Department with one goal: giving every person, regardless of their station in life, new opportunities to thrive.
NAA/NMHC applauded Secretary Castro’s confirmation last year. His experience as Mayor of San Antonio, and widely-respected reputation in that role, places him in a unique position to understand how national policies impact housing needs locally.
NAA/NMHC officers met with Secretary Castro last fall to discuss the importance of the rental housing sector. Their primary message was that a strong housing economy requires both a healthy single-family and rental sector. NAA/NMHC officers identified a number of reforms HUD could make to reduce bureaucratic red tape and make it easier for association members to create and operate the rental housing 37 million Americans rely on. NAA/NMHC officers also emphasized the importance of incentives over mandates, particularly in the area of energy efficiency. Learn more about the meeting.
Secretary Castro’s presentation will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 17. All NAA Capitol Conference attendees are welcome to attend but must register for the free lunch at the registration site.
