The Westminster City Council in Colorado gave preliminary approval to a controversial measure that would require property owners of rental properties to provide residents with voter registration information when they move in. If property owners fail to provide voter registration information, they will face a fine of up to $1,000. The council will likely take a final vote on the measure June 9. Similar measures have passed in East Lansing, Mich. and Madison, Wis. The Madison ordinance was overturned last year.
The Apartment Association of Metro Denver and the Colorado Apartment Association are working with other coalition partners to defeat this ordinance. The Denver Post Editorial Board wrote an editorial recently against the ordinance.
