Digested From “Program to Provide 206 Electric Vehicle Charging Stations at Apartments”
NBC San Diego (10/21/13)
ChargePoint, a California-based electric charging station operator, has launched a program along with the participation of the city of San Diego and the California Energy Commission to install more than 200 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at multifamily housing communities throughout San Diego County. The program enables apartment and condominium owners to apply for free EV chargers, with applicants assuming the costs for installation.
Considering the county has some 4,000 electric vehicles, there is a clear need for more public charging stations. Putting these stations in apartment communities will help to satisfy the current demand, as well as help residents make the move to using electric cars. ChargePoint CEO Pasquale Romano states, "This collaborative program demonstrates the commitment in this region to encourage EV adoption." Under the program, apartment and condo owners can defray most of the cost of the EV charging stations. In addition, they will receive a federal tax credit of 30 percent on the installation cost. The deadline for applications for the program is March 1. However, those considering the stations should apply early as there are a limited number of stations.
