| Industry Pillar: Property-Wide Wi-Fi |
More and more apartment owners and managers are implementing property-wide Wi-Fi access to the benefit of both their residents and staff. Residents, for instance, have the capability to log on the Internet in their unit, walk to any of the common areas in a building, and never lose access. Planning upfront is critical, though, reports Pillar Properties' Senior Vice President of Investments and Multifamily Operations Billy Pettit.
Camden Property Trust has begun using a platform that gives the company a simple way to log parcels using a USB barcode scanner or iPhone App and release those packages by capturing a resident’s signature. The new system has even done away with the manual steps of resident notifications, writes Camden's Senior Vice President of Strategic Services Kristy Simonette.
Rethinking the Light Switch
Light switches can represent an opportunity for apartment owners and managers to innovate, especially now that several companies are producing smartphone-controlled household devices that give residents greater control over interior illumination. This past summer, for instance, Belkin released the WeMo Light Switch that gives users the ability to turn lights on and off from an iPhone or Android phone.
RadPad Makes Apt. Hunting Easier
The new RadPad app gives apartment seekers a way to find available rental units in communities they like on a map, review photos of those apartments within the app, then arrange a time to visit them more quickly than they could using traditional brokers or rental marketplaces. RadPad also gives apartment owners and managers a way to easily create geotagged listings for a high volume of communities.
Get a Charge at These Apartments
ChargePoint, an electric charging station operator, has launched a program along with the participation of the city of San Diego and the California Energy Commission to install more than 200 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at multifamily housing communities throughout San Diego County. The program enables apartment and condominium owners to apply for free EV chargers, with applicants assuming the costs for installation.
