“We in America do not have government by the majority. We have government by the majority who participate.” —Thomas Jefferson
Grassroots advocacy is vital to the political efforts of our association. It is the efforts of individuals at the local level that influence public policy at the state and national level. You, as an individual, have a voice in our government!
This is why NAA Government Affairs will recognize you, the individual advocate, each year beginning in 2012. So often we ask you to advocate on behalf of the industry by meeting with your elected officials, sending a letter or making a phone call to your members of Congress. This award recognizes the work that you, the individual advocate, voluntarily do for the apartment industry throughout the year.
The Member Advocate of the Year will be announced at the Assembly of Delegates meeting in November and featured in a subsequent issue of units magazine.
All NAA industry members are eligible to win the Member Advocate of the Year Award.
Minimum Criteria: Attendance at Capitol Conference; participation in lobby day; attendance at two (2) of the following: Town hall meeting, tele-town hall meeting, meet with your members of Congress during a constituent workweek or the August congressional recess; take action on a legislative action alert by conducting a business call, or sending an e-mail, letter or fax to your representative or senator.
Above and Beyond Criteria: Recruit two (2) additional industry members to lobby day meetings or during a constituent workweek or August congressional recess; author a published op-ed or letter to the editor on a local, state or federal industry issue; speak on behalf of the industry at a town hall meeting or local meeting; recruit three (3) industry members to register to vote; work with your local affiliate to organize a candidate meeting.
We want to thank you in advance for the work you do on behalf of the industry in this important election year.
