White House: Section 8 'Inspections Pilot' In
Political Insider
As part of an ongoing effort by the Administration to streamline federal affordable housing programs, on Nov. 7 it announced a new pilot program to eliminate duplicative property inspections and other redundant regulatory requirements for federally subsidized properties. | The program recognizes that many affordable apartments rely on multiple sources of state and federal subsidies, and those programs already require multiple inspections.
Federal officials say affordable multifamily developers underwent 22,546 inspections on 10,485 properties in 2007 and that the pilot program could cut that number in half and save $28.8 million per year.
The pilot program will begin in Wisconsin, Michigan, Washington, Minnesota, Oregon and Ohio. NAA/NMHC welcome the news and participated in an earlier White House conference on this issue.
