One of the most aniticipating articles of the year in units appears each January when the NAA staff works with NAA members to compile “What’s In and What’s Out” for the coming year.
The 2012 edition appears on page 36. NAA thanks the more than 100 apartment professionals and service partner companies who contributed ideas for this list. The units staff then matched up the ins with the outs and mixed in a bit of humor and pop culture to make the list a “must read.”
Cost-saving ideas are always popular among apartment owners. On page 40, an article that evaluates the prospects of using LED lighting in apartment communities as an alternative to compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) appears.
This “bright” idea is worth checking out, especially given that incandescent light bulbs are being phased out towards year end.
Some owners confuse the rules and applications of the American Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Fair Housing Act (FHA). Fair housing expert Nadeen Green helps explain the rules in “Clearing Up ADA and FHA” on page 50.
Customer service, particularly over the phone when speaking with prospective residents, is a critical step for apartment communities looking to fill vacancies. Alliance Residential has developed a strong program, which is demonstrated in “Call to Fame is the Answer” on page 52.
It’s not too late for companies to prepare for National Apartment Careers Month,
supported by NAA’s Education Institute (NAAEI). Unlike in many industries, job
opportunities are plentiful in many markets for multifamily housing staff. This effort does not only take place in February. Learn how two student housing management companies are finding and training young professionals for future jobs in the apartment industry in “Apartments Are Hiring” on page 60. This article also explains how your company can participate in National Apartment Careers Month.
This edition of units also marks my first as 2012 NAA Chairman of the Board. Details and photos from the Assembly of Delegates, including my installation and that of all other NAA officers, can be found on page 67.
I look forward to serving this year and hope to meet you at an upcoming NAA event.
