AvalonBay hired Martin Piazzola as Senior Vice President of Development. He will work closely with Fred Harris, current head of New York City development, until Harris’s planned retirement Dec. 31. Effective Jan. 1, Piazzola is head of New York City development. AvalonBay also promoted Ron Ladell to Senior Vice President, Development. Ladell has led AvalonBay’s development efforts in New Jersey since late 2002.
Matthew Birenbaum has joined AvalonBay as Executive Vice President for Corporate Strategy. He plays an important role in developing AvalonBay’s investment strategy and serves on both the Executive Committee and the Management Investment Committee. He also has responsibility for Brand Strategy and Design functions.
Bell Partners named Raymond van Beveren Vice President of Construction Services. He is responsible for all aspects of property-related construction and renovation projects for its portfolio. Van Beveren previously was Senior Vice President and Director of Construction Services for TVO North America. Elias Rosario, who has been overseeing a billion-dollar-plus budget as CFO at the Chicago Housing Authority, is the latest senior executive to join the Philadelphia Housing Authority. A Temple University graduate, Rosario serves as Deputy Executive Director of Finance.
Boston-based WinnCompanies appointed Michael Defferding as its Executive Vice President of Property Management for its Military Housing Services. The Military Housing Service was created as a joint venture between WinnResidential and Actus Lend Lease. Defferding previously was Executive Vice President with Forest City Enterprise’s business branch and was responsible for managing development, construction, property, asset and maintenance. Defferding served 20 years as an officer in the U.S. Army.
WinnCompanies also hired Deirdre Kuring as Chief Administration Officer. Kuring is responsible for back office operations including IT, training, compliance, purchasing and sustainability. Kuring spent the past 10 years as Executive Vice President of BRE.
Hines hired John Favreau as Vice President in its West Region. The 24-year industry veteran is based in Los Angeles and coordinates multifamily activities in Southern California and the Pacific Northwest, including Utah, Oregon and Washington, in coordination with Alan Patton, Hines’ Senior Vice President of the Multifamily Division. Favreau most recently was Co-Founder and Principal of JRS Realty Partners, a Southern California-based developer and manager of apartment communities.
