House Advances E-Verify
Political Insider
The House Judiciary Committee on Sept. 21 approved legislation (H.R. 2885) that would require all employers to use the federal government’s E-Verify program to confirm the employment eligibility of new hires. Under current law, federal contractors must use E-Verify, and some states require most other employers to use the system.
The bill also reduces the number of identification documents that an employer can accept when using E-Verify and increases employer penalties. Final passage of the bill is uncertain even if it is approved by the full House because it is opposed by Senate Democrats.
