 When Hiring, Consider ‘Best Behavior’

 Management Insider

Behavior-based questions can help managers hire candidates who will thrive in the apartment industry, regardless of previous experience.

Following are nine effective interview questions:

1. Describe a situation in which you were able to use persuasion to
successfully convince someone to see things your way.

2. Describe a time when you were faced with a stressful situation that demonstrated your coping skills.

3. Give me a specific example of a time when you used good judgment and logic in solving a problem.

4. Give me an example of a time when you set a goal and were able to achieve it.

5. Give me a specific example of a time when you had to conform to a policy with which you did not agree.

6. Tell me about a time you had to fire a friend.

7. Was there ever a decision you made that you regretted?

8. Give me an example of a time when you had to make a split second decision.

9. Tell me about a recent situation in which you had to deal with a very upset customer or co-worker.

For information on this technique, check out “Behavior-Based Interviewing” in the April, 2010, issue of units.
