Strive to Be ‘More Than That’

 Management Insider

She was 21 and worked as a part-time leasing agent at a 264-unit community while she finished up her senior year in college. She worked three or four days a week and every Saturday. She was good at her job. She never said, “I’m just a Leasing Agent.” She knew she was more than that.

She showed a flair for ad design and copywriting, along with outside marketing. She was promoted to Marketing Director for the community when her company opened 120 new units. Even still, she never said, “I’m just a Marketing Director.” She knew she was more than that.

She worked hard, made sure she learned all her residents’ first names and never hesitated to work overtime or help her co-workers. She got promoted to Site Manager when the company transferred her manager to another property. Wisely, her company knew her skills wouldn’t fit the role of Assistant Manager, so they skipped that step and put her into the site manager’s role. She never said, “I’m just a Property Manager.” She knew she was more than that.

The portfolio evolved, grew and one day she was running the management company. She never said, “I’m the President of the management company” because she knew she started as a Leasing Agent and had worked her way up to her current role. She knew that to keep the respect of her teams, she had to remain close to her properties, close to her roots and remember that property Leasing Agents, Marketing Directors and Property Managers are all essential to the success of the company she was now running.

Do you believe that you are more than that? If no, why not? Do you treat your co-workers and your teams like they are more than that? If not, why not?

These are good questions to ask yourself as you begin your work day today.
