NAA/NMHC have received requested guidance from the U.S. Department of Commerce clarifying apartment owner/manager obligations related to Census 2010.
Most households began to receive Census questionnaires in March; responses were due April 1. Apartment operators can expect Census enumerators to visit their communities beginning in May to try to contact residents who have not responded. By law, apartment operators must assist in this process by allowing Census enumerators access to their communities (i.e., knock on resident doors or buzz apartment call boxes) and, in situations where the resident cannot be reached, provide information about the resident.
