 Eight Qualities of Career-Ladder Climbers

 Management Insider

Specific skills and attitudes have profound impacts on position advancement. Following are eight qualities needed to achieve maximum upward career mobility:

1. Be business-minded. Maintain an ownership mentality on every decision made.

2. Be self-motivated. Do not wait for others to inspire action.

3. Be results-oriented. Harness the ability to achieve
directives.

4. Be organized. Keep needed and archived materials in a systematic order.

5. Be passionate. Cultivate an inner drive toward accomplishment and loyalty.

6. Be honest. Accept responsibility and accountability for chosen actions.

7. Be dedicated. Follow tasks through to completion.

8. Be an effective communicator. Articulate plans and consider others’ ideas.

Consistency in all of these qualities is essential. To test effectiveness, consider this: If you re-wrote your résumé today to include only those accomplishments achieved during the past year, would you be able to command the same or a better position, level of respect and salary than you have currently? To answer this question, take inventory of what you have done to actively pursue your employer’s goals and mission, whether that be through saving time, increasing efficiency or saving money.

If you haven’t made concrete contributions in the past year, actively work toward doing so. The only job security you have is to be more talented tomorrow than you are today.
