Apartment Residents Poised to Increase Voting Strength

The electoral power of apartment residents is growing: In 2012, 22 percent of voters were apartment residents, and this election that percentage is predicted to grow to 25 percent, according to an Apartment List analysis of U.S. Census data.

However, apartment residents are still less likely to cast their ballots than homeowners. Part of this is related to the transiency of renting, though a bigger factor is age. Younger people are less likely to vote, and a good percentage of apartment residents fall into this demographic.

Apartment residents have been slowly but surely voting more over the past few presidential election cycles. Between 1996 and 2012, renter votes rose by 49 percent, while homeowner votes increased by 23 percent, according to the Apartment List analysis.

To increase the political participation of apartment residents, affordable housing group Enterprise Community Partners started a national campaign called Make Room.
