ARLINGTON, Va., May 23, 2013 — Calling all veterans, transitioning military and military spouses -- the apartment industry needs you!

In partnership with the San Diego County Apartment Association, the National Apartment Association Education Institute (NAAEI) is encouraging veterans and military spouses in Southern California and the San Diego area to register for its 2013 NAA Education Institute Military Career Fair that will be held on Wednesday, June 19 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the San Diego Convention Center.

The career fair will feature hiring representatives from as many as 50 apartment industry companies with job openings in Southern California and other locations around the nation – for those applicants wanting to return home or are willing to relocate. Attendance at the career fair is limited to veterans, transitioning military and military spouses.

NAAEI President William Wollinger, CAPS, SHCM, said the apartment industry offers a wealth of opportunities to veterans and returning military, who continue to see some of the nation’s highest unemployment rates.

“Skills held by military veterans are in high demand by the apartment industry,” he said. “Their abilities to multi-task, problem-solve and work well as a member of a team make them a great fit with our industry. Because apartment industry careers are portable, they work particularly well for transitioning military members or military spouses who often move around a lot. Almost every city or town has an apartment community.”

Approximately 686,000 people work at apartment communities around the nation. Typical career paths include apartment maintenance, apartment leasing, apartment management and apartment supplier sales and service. The industry also employs people in a wide variety of jobs – from marketing and accounting to training and information technology. In addition, many employers offer training or provide educational support for employees taking industry-related courses.

Registering for the military career fair is free and as easy as 1-2-3. Attendees may register online at, upload a resume and then schedule an interview with one or more companies participating in the event. Once registered, attendees also can review specific job openings so they can determine which companies they would like to meet with at the career fair.

The career fair is being held in conjunction with the 2013 NAA Education Conference and Exposition, which attracts more than 6,200 multifamily housing professionals. Companies participating in the career fair pay $1,000 each for booth space. NAAEI is donating 100 percent of that fee to two San Diego-area military charities -- Armed Services YMCA San Diego and REBOOT, a nonprofit that provides training to help veterans transition from the battlefront to the homefront.
