ARLINGTON, Va. / June 16, 2014 – The National Apartment Association Education Institute (NAAEI) will honor the Anthony V. Pusateri Apartment Career Promotion Award recipients during the June 21 Awards Breakfast at the 2014 NAA Education Conference & Exposition in Denver.

The Anthony V. Pusateri awards recognize an individual, a company or an association who have made the biggest impact creating awareness of careers in the apartment industry among high school and college students, military veterans and spouses or career changers through outreach activities.

The Houston Apartment Foundation will receive the award for Comprehensive Apartment Career Promotion Program. In 2013, the Houston Apartment Foundation developed five initiatives to promote apartment careers. The first was a Community Career Night at Houston Community College. Over 100 jobseekers attended the event and 14 member companies participated as exhibitors. Several jobseekers were directly hired and the community college received new registrations for its certificate program in residential property management. Houston Apartment Foundation also updated its Leasing 101 course to include e-leasing and new technologies and trends. In 2013, nearly 200 people attended one of six offerings of the updated course. The online version was taken by 166 students.

To further apartment career promotion, Houston Apartment Foundation participated in three career fairs last year, with nearly 1,000 people attending. Since 2006, Houston Apartment Foundation has also offered a scholarship that covers tuition costs for the property management certificate program at Houston Community College. Four applicants were selected in 2013, receiving a total of $5,040. In its final initiative, Houston Apartment Foundation continued to promote The Job Line—a portal on its website for job posting and resume collection.

Additionally, the Austin Apartment Association (AAA) and Texas Apartment Association Education Foundation (TAAEF) will receive the award for Single Apartment Career Promotion Event.

AAA and TAAEF hosted the Career Awareness Reception to promote careers in the apartment industry. The event was intended to showcase the CAMT program in partnership with Austin Community College (ACC), create awareness of the apartment industry to Goodwill case workers and address management companies’ concerns about Goodwill’s participation and quality of individuals. The reception achieved—and surpassed—all of AAA and TAAEF’s goals. In particular, the reception boosted the maintenance program by recruiting 10 prequalified individuals for the ACC/Goodwill maintenance program and increased participation by non-active AAA management company members. An overwhelming number of association members participated in the job shadowing program.

The Career Awareness Reception also elevated the value and benefits of AAA, TAAEF and NAA membership and educated individuals at Texas Workforce Commission, the Veteran Affairs Office, Goodwill and Austin Community College about careers in the apartment industry. Association staff members were featured panelists at a Goodwill Careers Conference, discussing how to work with local apartment associations in creating similar programs.

NAA President & CEO Doug Culkin, CAE, said, “The Anthony V. Pusateri Apartment Career Promotion Awards recognize the outstanding contributions of multifamily professionals and affiliated apartment associations who, like Tony Pusateri was, are passionate about promoting Residential Property Management as a career.”
