ARLINGTON, Va. / July 28, 2014 – The National Apartment Association Education Institute (NAAEI) earned a 2014 ASAE Power of A Silver Award for the MI-BEST Certificate for Apartment Maintenance Technician (MI-BEST CAMT) program. The pilot program was designed by Montgomery College to help low-income adults acquire the skills and credentials they need to advance their careers and wages in the Maryland and Washington, D.C., region and was funded by a $105,000 grant from the Greater Washington Workforce development Collaborative.

ASAE honored NAAEI’s efforts to build a more competent apartment maintenance workforce through the certificate program, which features joint instruction conducted by Montgomery College technical and English language/basic skills faculty members.

“The apartment industry is growing, as is the need for talent to manage and operate the communities in which more and more people choose to make a home,” said Maureen Lambe, CAE, Executive Vice President of NAAEI. “We have supported the development of industry-driven curriculum and credentials and demonstrated the commitment of our member companies to professionalize the apartment industry and create programs to help workers advance in a portable career.”

With a large immigrant population and evident need for English language instruction, Montgomery College partnered with NAAEI to close the significant gap in services with respect to workforce training appropriate to the needs of English language learners and those in need of basic skills development. The MI-BEST CAMT program was created with this in mind.

ASAE’s Power of A (association) Awards—the industry’s highest honor—recognize the association community’s valuable contributions on the local, national and global level. The Power of A Awards reward the outstanding accomplishments of associations and industry professionals for their efforts to enrich lives, create a competitive workforce, prepare society for the future, drive innovation and make a better world.

“Congratulations to NAAEI for benefitting not just their own industry or profession, but society at large,” said Paul Pomerantz, CAE, chair of the Power of A Awards Judging Committee and CEO of the American Society of Anesthesiologists. “This year, our committee had an exceptionally strong group of entries to consider, and it’s heartening to see so many organizations excelling in their work.”
