ARLINGTON, Va. / April 14, 2014 – To help bridge a leadership knowledge gap in the apartment industry, the National Apartment Association Education Institute (NAAEI) is partnering with Dale Carnegie Leadership Training to offer the NAAEI Leadership Experience: Powered by Dale Carnegie from April 30 to May 1 at the Hotel Monaco in Baltimore.
NAAEI developed the course after hearing from industry executives and managers that the apartment industry trains its onsite staff well but falls short in providing the necessary training when those people are promoted into mid-level leadership roles. NAAEI launched the NAAEI Leadership Experience: Powered by Dale Carnegie last fall with a pilot class in Atlanta. The course was offered again earlier this month in Dallas.
The two-day course covers topics such as developing personal leadership, communicating to lead, coaching for performance, delegating, and building trust, credibility and respect. These skills are critical for people moving into mid-level management roles in the apartment industry. The course targets regional managers, mid-level managers and corporate department heads.
The apartment industry has seen tremendous growth in recent years. Nearly 35 million Americans now call apartments “home,” and as many as 7 million new renter households are expected to form this decade. As a result, deserving industry professionals have been promoted fairly quickly into management positions. Without the proper leadership training, such promotions can have a negative impact on employee turnover rates and the success of the apartment communities they oversee.
Kendra Majors, NALP, Area Manager for Western Rim Property Services, mentors a team of six to eight properties and attended the Dallas course earlier this month. Watch her testimonial below.
“This course helped me recognize the areas in which I needed improvement to make me a more effective leader and to empower the people around me,” she said. “I recommend the course to others in the profession because you will learn so much about yourself, how to be an effective leader and how to coach those around you.”
NAAEI offers two scholarships that pay for recipients to attend the course, which is offered several times a year. NAAEI recently named Melissa White of Marietta, Ga., as the recipient of the Alexandra Jackiw Leadership Scholarship. White will attend the Baltimore course.
“It is refreshing to see NAAEI partner with the reputable Dale Carnegie Training to combine Dale Carnegie’s proven leadership principles with the core competencies of multifamily management,” said White, who serves as National Director of Marketing and Training for GFI Management Services, Inc.
The National Apartment Association Education Institute (NAAEI) is the education and research arm of the National Apartment Association. The mission of the NAAEI is to provide broad-based education, training and recruitment programs that attract, nurture and retain high-quality professionals and develop tomorrow’s apartment industry leaders.
