NAA Industry Insider: New-Home Building is Shifting to Apartments

Census data shows that the share of new homes being built as rental apartments is at the highest level in at least four decades. The shift toward apartment construction is the result of several trends, including tight mortgage credit and sluggish wage gains. In addition, many Americans continue to shoulder high student-debt loads, which has forced more young people who otherwise would have bought homes to rent instead.
