April Is Fair Housing Month: Learn More and Get Involved

April is Fair Housing Month when HUD marks the passage of the Fair Housing Act by President Lyndon Johnson in 1968 shortly after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The law is built on the protections secured by the Civil Rights Act, which this year celebrates its 50th anniversary, and prohibits discrimination in the rental, sale and financing of housing based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability and family status.

NAA/NMHC respect all those who made tremendous sacrifices to ensure that equality in housing became a reality.  We remain solidly committed to the mission and goals of this significant legislation.

When Fair Housing Month is celebrated around the country each year – at all levels of government and within the real estate community – apartment owners, managers and developers are offered the opportunity to reaffirm their commitment to fair housing in the following ways:

  • Increasing awareness within apartment firms by reviewing the key elements of the law with onsite staff;
  • Refreshing training materials to ensure accurate adherence to all compliance obligations;
  • Revisiting property publications and promotional products for required advertising considerations;
  • Reviewing leasing practices and policies to meet the requirements of HUD’s reasonable accommodations and modifications rules; and
  • Surveying properties and units for compliance with the design and construction requirements of the Act.

NAA/NMHC members are encouraged to visit the HUD website for more information on Fair Housing Month, as well as opportunities to participate.

More resources and information about industry issues related to fair housing are available.
