NAA Extends Member Benefits to Dues-Paying California Members
A recent decision by the California Apartment Association (CAA) to end affiliation with the National Apartment Association (NAA) has left some California members without member services despite having paid for them.
NAA wishes to continue to provide full member benefits to CAA members. To renew, simply provide proof of payment for your 2009 dues and submit it to the attention of the NAA Membership Department. The NAA fax number is 703/248-9440, or mail it to the NAA offices at NAA, 4300 Wilson Blvd., Suite 400, Arlington, VA 22203. You may also e-mail a pdf of the payment to membership@naahq.org.
If you have questions about this renewal please contact NAA’s Membership Director Valerie Hairston at 703/797-0624 or e-mail valerie@naahq.org or NAA’s Tara Bannister in California at tara@naahq.org to discuss continuing your valuable relationship with NAA.
This situation has occurred in the aftermath of the May 14, 2009, decision of the CAA Board to withdraw from NAA. Since then, many now-former NAA members in California contacted us to report that they were surprised and disappointed by the decision. Some have rejoined NAA as direct members, which is a category with a higher dues structure than the 47 cents per unit through a local affiliate. NAA’s Board of Directors discussed this issue at the June 24, 2009, meeting in Las Vegas.
CAA owes outstanding dues to NAA despite its receipt of dues from its members for that purpose and many California members feel penalized because CAA’s action means they now are required to pay higher dues to remain affiliated with NAA.
To address this situation, the NAA Board decided to extend regular member benefits to all California members who desire them through the expiration of their membership, or Dec. 31, 2009, whichever comes first. These benefits include:
- Access to the Members-Only areas of the NAA Web site;
- NAA’s alerts and updates about state, local and federal legislation;
- Focused federal advocacy efforts on topics such as rent control, Megan’s law, estate tax and utility billing;
- Access to NAA’s National Lease Program powered by Blue Moon, Inc. The NAA Lease is the most widely used residential lease in the country;
- Use of NAA’s library of industry best practices, industry-specific white papers and reports on issues such as lead-based paint, mold, bed bugs, etc.;
- Industry data and research on vacancy rates, market reports and new construction;
- A monthly subscription to units magazine and our weekly e-newsletter Industry Insider;
- Access to the Certified Apartment Manager Online course and Fair Housing and Beyond!
- Online education program at member prices;
- Free copies of Apartment Career promotion DVDs and brochures for use at high school, college and military career fairs; and
- The opportunity to participate in the Better Government Fund or NAAPAC efforts.
Any member who can demonstrate NAA dues payments beyond May 14, 2009, (the date of the CAA Board vote to disaffiliate) will continue to receive member benefits. Please submit a copy of your dues invoice from your local CAA affiliate with proof of payment and NAA will continue your membership through the expiration irrespective of whether CAA remitted those dues payments to NAA. NAA has begun discussions with other independent California apartment associations about affiliation into the NAA network and will keep you informed of new developments. We value our members in California and regret the unfortunate consequences of CAA’s decision to withdraw.
