NAA/NMHC Joint Legislative Program

 Key Contact Program Objectives

  • Represent the profession to one or more of your federal or state legislators.
  • Develop a personal, constituent relationship with the legislator based on mutual trust and respect.
  • Know your legislator's political background, issue priorities, and committees he or she serves on.
  • Respond immediately to Action Alerts from NAA by contacting your legislator on the specified issues.
  • Reinforce the constituent relationship with your legislator by regularly communicating professional and nonprofessional issues that may be of interest to him or her and the staff.
  • Be aware of pending federal and state legislation that may affect the profession. Be prepared to discuss the impact on your practice, your clients, and the community.
  • Attend political fundraising events for NAAPAC when requested.
  • Build community understanding and support for the profession and its position on the issues.
  • Provide feedback to the Government Relations Team that is useful in developing legislative strategy and achieving NAA's objectives.

Key Contacts are those in our industry who recognize the difference that individuals can make in the legislative process on behalf of the profession, their clients, and the public.

The responsibilities of a Key Contact are few. The NAA carefully watches events in Washington DC an across the country. When a "hot topic" arises that we need grassroots support for (or against) we activate our Key Contacts. We supply detailed materials that provide the necessary background so they can make personal visits to their legislator, or call or write regarding the topic.

The success of the profession's Key Contact Program is affected directly by how well Key Contacts understand and carry out their objectives.
