One of my favorite books right now is by Marshall Goldsmith titled ‘What Got You Here, Won’t Get You There’. It’s a book for our changing times with powerful ideas to overcome whatever you are doing to hold yourself back. Most noteworthy is a concept all leaders need today. It’s appropriate sharing or withholding of information and emotion. This alone has the ability to amp your team’s performance through establishing greater connection and trust in relationships.
Too many people I know are scared. In these unstable times, doubt and fear of uncertainty are still running rampant. Unfortunately, fear prompts retreat. And this is just the opposite of what will assist you and your team members to thrive. In a recent Wall Street Journal article, Gregory Berns a neuro-economist, told of his brain-imaging experiment. In his study he observed that our fears are being transferred to the workplace…and everything associated with work and money. When fear takes over the brain, it makes it impossible to concentrate on anything but self-preservation.
I’m on a mission and I want to invite you to join me. It’s all about creating value and making money. It’s time to start living with your new budget for the year. While I can’t think of any specific leaders, managers or owners who actually like the annual budget creation process, it’s truly an essential business tool.
