Apartment Managers Say Continuing Education Key to Higher Pay, Promotions, NAAEI Survey Reports

Survey Results Reinforce the Importance of Career Education to Apartment Industry

WASHINGTON, D.C. – June 8, 2011 – Apartment industry managers say continuing education courses and professional designation programs are worth the time and expense of sending employees through the classes and provide them with the tools they need to better perform on the job, according to a recent survey by the National Apartment Association Education Institute (NAAEI).

The institute conducted the survey earlier this year among 724 supervisors of employees who earned one of NAAEI’s designations: Certificate for Apartment Maintenance Technicians (CAMT), Certified Apartment Portfolio Supervisor (CAPS), Certified Apartment Manager (CAM) and National Apartment Leasing Professional (NALP).

Among the survey highlights:

  • 98 percent of all respondents either agreed or strongly agreed that the designation courses were a good use of company time and money
  • 76 percent said that it was not an issue to have their employee out of the office to take the designation course
  • 86 percent of all supervisors saw an improvement in their employee's work performance following the completion of their respective NAAEI designation
  • 100 percent of those surveyed would enroll employees in designations in the future

“The results from our survey provide valuable insight into the importance of career education to our industry,” said Jeff Lowry, CAPS, NAAEI President. “They also indicate the significant role our designation programs are playing in helping people further their careers and in obtaining new skills and knowledge that benefit employers.”

Many of those managers surveyed reported that employees who went through one of NAAEI’s programs received a promotion, salary increase and/or one-time bonus after successful completion of the course. Others said they saw a marked improvement in how employees approached their jobs, how they performed duties such as analyzing a property’s financial operations and how they made on-the-job decisions.

"An absolute 100 percent return (on investment), the program also gives the employee much more confidence to be able to pass such a comprehensive course," said one respondent, who had sent one of their employees to the CAMT course.

Another supervisor said, “The NALP course is a wonderful program that helps enhance the skills of our associates, as well as prepares them for additional responsibilities that benefit both the associate and the company. I have noticed that after receiving the designation (the employee’s) role with our company was expanded, and she has been able to use the tools she learned with her NALP designation to help with her continued growth as an employee and individual.”

Lowry said NAAEI will conduct this survey annually to continue to monitor the link between earning a NAAEI designation and improved work performance.
