“Fair Housing and Beyond” Seminar, Scenario-Based Learning for Residential Property Management Professionals

The National Apartment Association Education Institute (NAAEI) and The Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM) join forces to enhance fair housing education among rental housing providers.

The core audience for the new learning initiative includes: on-site managers, leasing consultants, maintenance technicians and both regional and corporate apartment executives.

Now available in a facilitator-led classroom seminar, the 4.5 hour seminar will be accessible through NAA affiliates and IREM chapters. Using self-assessments and realistic video narrative scenarios, the program utilizes situational learning and promotes deep learning and awareness by going “beyond the basics” to consider numerous factors, make decisions and reflect on the outcomes.

NAAEI and IREM have partnered to develop this coursework and education initiative. NAAEI represents the education and career development division of NAA, while IREM serves as a professional association for managers of income-producing properties worldwide.

The “Fair Housing and Beyond” seminar was created by subject matter experts from both of the above organizations. A legal firm specializing in Fair Housing reviewed all course content to insure compliance with Fair Housing Law.

Fair housing violations continue to present day-to-day issues within the rental housing community. With this in mind, there is always a need for fair housing training, and the apartment industry has been addressing this need for over 40 years. “Fair Housing & Beyond” departs from other fair housing classes that primarily enforce memorization. This course employs scenario-based learning using video vignettes and requires students to think through situations encountered on-site, resolve these issues through critical thought and analyze the outcomes of their solutions.

“Fair Housing is the right thing to do because it’s part of the moral and ethical base of this country. We all want the opportunity to be treated fairly, we want the opportunity to live where our choices allow us to, and we should not be subject to the kind of discriminatory practices that might have existed 50 and 60 years ago. Fair Housing allows for fair treatment for all of our citizens, and we are all entitled to that.”
